Come in and meet the new director of the Oley Valley Community Library, Miriam Stone. She was born and raised in Dallas, PA and from the time she was young, she decided that she was at home whenever she was in a library. The Back Mountain Memorial Library was her first job and one she held until she finished college.

She graduated from Misericordia University with a Bachelor’s degree and attained graduate credits from Marywood University in the fields of education and developmental disabilities. She began her career as a teacher of developmentally disabled children for Child Development Council in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

She married and moved to Easton, PA where she worked both as a teacher for Northampton County Community College in Bethlehem and a library technician for Mary Meuser Memorial Library in Wilson Borough.

She and her husband added two children to their family and moved to Wyomissing, PA where she took over as director of the West Lawn Wyomissing Hills Library. At the same time, she went back to school to pursue her degree in Library Science and taught in the Early Learning Center of Reading Area
Community College.

She left West Lawn to take a position with The Yocum Library at Reading Area Community College as the Learning Resource and Access Specialist. Under the guidance of Mary Ellen G. Heckman, the library’s director, she developed an Interlibrary Loan System and worked with over 2,000 libraries across the country sharing library resources. She remained there for 26 years before she became the director of the Oley Valley Community Library in April of this year.

She was immediately taken by the beauty of Oley Valley and she discovered the warmth and caring of the people she and her staff have the privilege to serve. Miriam is committed to the idea that a library is unique. It is the only place in the world that can give you something completely free of charge and with no strings attached – knowledge.
